Biden condemns “political violence” on the second anniversary of the Capitol bombing

Two years after the attack on the Capitol, President Joe Biden stressed on Friday that “there is no place for political violence” in the United States and took the opportunity to woo the police officers who faced the many angry protesters that day.

The US Congress is having another busy day this Friday, despite another blockade, with Republicans blocking the election of their leader to the House of Representatives, even as the majority won in November’s midterm elections.

But Democrat Joe Biden took advantage of the event to be clear: “There is no place … in America for voter intimidation. Never, ever for political violence.”

“America is a land of justice, not chaos”The 80-year-old ruler, before greeting “a remarkable group of American citizens”, underlined the police officers who stopped the mob entering the Capitol, encouraged by former President Donald Trump, for the certification of Biden’s electoral victory in the 2020 Presidential Election.

“History will remember your names”assured the US president before awarding a total of 14 “Presidential Medals of Citizenship”, one of America’s highest civilian honors – including three posthumously.

Biden graced members of the security forces, some of whose faces have become familiar to Americans, in seeing the impressive footage of the invaded Capitol or for the incredible testimony before the parliamentary investigative committee that investigated the incident.

The White House chief also honored those elected or in charge of election operations in several states who resisted pressure and threats to try to force them to change the outcome of the ballot won by Joe Biden.

Biden also praised the “elegance and dignity” of the families of the three posthumously decorated officers.

The wife of police officer Brian Sicknick, who was assaulted during the attack on the Capitol and died a day later, filed a lawsuit today against the two men who pleaded guilty, but also against former President Donald Trump.

Sandra Garza’s defense is asking for at least $10 million (9.4 million euros) in damages for each of the victims who plead guilty, pointing out that the officer’s death was a “immediate and foreseeable consequence” from Trump’s words in a speech to his supporters on January 6, 2021.
