An earthquake was reported in an archipelago located in eastern Indonesia, more precisely on the side of the Tanimbar Islands. On Twitter, however, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center later ruled out the risk of a tsunami.
a powerful phenomenon
The measure of the power of the earthquake continues to float according to experts. Thus, according to the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center, the magnitude of the phenomenon is evaluated at 7.7.
The BMKG organization, Indonesia’s agency for meteorology, climatology and geophysics, has quantified a magnitude of 7.9. Finally, the United States Geological Survey – the American seismological institute – pointed to an index of 7.6.
In either case, vigilance is required around the potential severity of the earthquake. In a first message on Twitter, BMKG had even issued an “early warning for tsunami in the region”.
But the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center “dismissed” this threat in a subsequent publication.
The earthquake occurred at 0:47 a.m. this Tuesday according to the time of the Indonesian capital, Jakarta, that is, around 6:47 p.m. this Monday in France.
