“They are making us disappear”: the cry of Afghan women at the UN

Since returning to power on August 15, 2021, the Taliban have placed severe restrictions on girls and women to conform to their ultra-rigorous view of Islam.

Afghan women on Monday launched a strong appeal to the United Nations for real international action to end the “gender apartheid” established in their country since the return to power of the Taliban.

“Today, human rights in Afghanistan do not exist,” Mahbouba Seraj told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva during a debate on the rights of Afghan women and girls.

This journalist and women’s rights activist in Afghanistan is “fed up” with unsuccessfully sounding the alarm about the abrogation of the rights of women and girls in her country. They should be completely covered in public, including the face, ideally with the burqa, a full veil with mesh at eye level.

A “gender apartheid”

“Afghan women are now at the mercy of a group that is fundamentally anti-women and does not recognize women as human beings,” said Razia Sayad, an Afghan lawyer and former commissioner of the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission.

“The women of this country do not exist… They are making us disappear,” added Mahbouba Seraj. He called on UN leaders to take all possible measures to reverse the situation.

She, along with others, suggested that the Human Rights Council establish a group of independent experts to monitor all violations, with the aim of holding perpetrators accountable.

The UN special rapporteur on Afghanistan, Richard Bennett, also highlighted the importance of strengthening the issue of accountability and suggested that the situation could be compared to “gender apartheid”.
