More than 1,200 flights were delayed and another 100 canceled due to a computer glitch in the US Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) system. The system provides crews with information about hazards, procedures, and changes to airport facilities and the problem is preventing planes from taking off.
The FAA said it was “working to restore the Air Mission Reporting System.”
“We are carrying out final validation checks and reloading of the system. Operations through the National Airspace System are being affected,” the FAA wrote in a post on the social network Twitter.
United Airlines, the main US carrier, “temporarily postponed all domestic flights” due to this issue.
US Secretary of State for Transportation Pete Buttigieg said he is in contact with the FAA: “I was in contact with the FAA this morning about an outage that affected a key system for providing safety information to pilots.” .
“The FAA is working to quickly and safely resolve this issue so air traffic can resume normal operations and will continue to provide updates,” it added.
