Police officer killed in shooting in Canada

A police officer was killed and at least two people had to be taken to hospital on Monday after a shooting in broad daylight in the Toronto area, Canadian security forces and media said.

“One person was pronounced dead at the scene and others were taken to hospital,” police wrote on Twitter.

The main suspect was arrested after he tried to flee in a stolen vehicle, regional police added, citing two shootings.

There is no longer “any other threat to public safety,” he said.

Several local media outlets, including public radio and CBC television, said a Toronto police officer was killed.

At 4:30 p.m. (9:30 p.m. in Lisbon), regional authorities issued an alert about an “armed” and “dangerous” man who had fled from a shopping center after a shooting.

Shortly afterward, police in the town of Milton, a few miles away, said they had arrested the suspect involved in a second shooting.

Canada has recently been rocked by several episodes of high-profile violence, including a series of stabbings in an isolated indigenous community in Saskatchewan on September 4, which left 10 dead and 18 injured.

One of the suspects in this case was found dead and the second was arrested after four days on the run, before dying in custody.

In April 2020, a gunman posing as a police officer killed 22 people in Nova Scotia. In January 2017, six people were killed and five injured in attacks on a mosque in Quebec.
