Former US President Donald Trump has officially asked to be allowed to return to Facebook, his campaign announced Wednesday, calling “not to silence” a presidential candidate, AFP reports.
Former US President Scott Gast’s lawyer sent a letter to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg asking for “a meeting to discuss the prompt reinstatement” of Donald Trump on the social network.
“We believe that the suspension of President Trump’s Facebook account has radically distorted and restricted public debate,” the January 17 letter read.
Donald Trump had been suspended from the social network, for a period of two years, after the attack by his supporters at the Capitol, on January 6, 2021.
At the time, Facebook estimated that the former president of the United States could only return when “the risks to public safety disappeared.”
Questioned by AFP, a spokesperson for Meta, Facebook’s parent company, referred to a decision on this request “in the coming weeks.”
Donald Trump was reinstated on Twitter on November 19, 2022, four days after he declared his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.
However, she has yet to post any messages to this account, primarily communicating through her own platform, Truth Social.
