Costa in Brussels this Thursday to meet with Ursula von der Leyen

The President of the Government will meet this Thursday night with the President of the European Commission, in Brussels, and at the meeting he must address the possibility of renewing the Iberian mechanism to limit the price of gas to produce electricity

The meeting between António Costa and Ursula von der Leyen is barely described as a “work meeting” and last week a spokesperson for the Comissão Europeia revealed that it would be discussed “everything or that is relevant” for the community block or for the country.

However, on Wednesday the Minister of the Environment, Duarte Cordeiro, met with the Vice President of the Commission and Competition Commissioner, Margrethe Vestager, in Brussels, to discuss the extension of the Iberian mechanism that limits the price of gas purchased to produce electricity. . . The socialist ruler was accompanied by Teresa Ribera, the Spanish Minister in charge of Energy.

Only a “positive” signal emerged from that meeting, according to a note released by the Ministry of the Environment, and Portugal and Spain promised to present proposals as soon as possible.

The last time that Costa and von der Leyen met was at the European Council meeting in December, where the President of the Portuguese Government defended the renewal, starting in May, of the Iberian mechanism that limits the price of gas in the production of electricity .

“From our part and from Spain, we emphasize that, regardless of the setting of this gas price correction mechanism, it is essentially about renewing, as of May, the Iberian solution, […] that it has not distorted the market and that it has allowed Portuguese companies and those based in Portugal and Spain -and also France, whenever it acquires energy in the Iberian Peninsula- to always have more competitive prices than those practiced in the market international”, said António Costa at the time.
