The leaders of Spain and France reaffirmed this Thursday their political will to carry out the H2MED project, with the aim of supplying France with green hydrogen produced by Portugal and Spain.
In a press conference at the Spanish-French summit, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, and the French President, Emmanuel Macron, said they wanted to strengthen Europe’s energy independence.
It is a gas pipeline “that will link France with Spain and Portugal through Barcelona and Marseille and to which we have undoubtedly devoted special attention,” says the Spanish official.

For the President of the Government of Spain, the future of Europe and strategic autonomy in energy matters are being designed here.
“We reaffirm our commitment to an infrastructure that offers the entire European Union one of the technologies with the greatest future, which is hydrogen. Synonymous with sustainability, diversification and something very important in these moments of strategic autonomy”, he explains.
Pedro Sánchez admits that the submarine connection from Barcelona to Marseille for the transport of Green Hydrogen represents an energy transition: “The submarine connection for the transport of decarbonised hydrogen represents the triumph of scientific innovation and the ecological transformation championed by both governments as a consequence of the commitments they have in the fight against climate change”.
The need to move quickly with the changes in the European electricity market a reform for the coming months. The construction of the international green hydrogen pipeline between Portugal, Spain and France will cost 2.5 billion euros.
