Downing Street acknowledges a “brief misjudgment”. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appeared in a car without a seatbelt on. According to the BBC, the scene, filmed and broadcast on the British head of government’s Instagram account, took place in the county of Lancashire.
Rishi Sunak promotes the “Leveling up” government program that comes to support disadvantaged regions of the country. But form trumped substance, and internet users noted that the Prime Minister broke the Highway Code (British Highway Code, editor’s note).
“So blatant contempt”, “So incompetent”, “Who puts the seatbelt on him? His butler? His driver? His mother?”… The virulent messages against the leader have multiplied lately on the social networks Twitter .
Lancaster police ‘will review the incident’
The Prime Minister’s Office reacted to the criticized footage: “It was a brief error in judgement. The Prime Minister removed his seatbelt to film a small video clip. He fully acknowledges that it was a mistake and apologizes.”
“The Prime Minister believes everyone should wear a seatbelt,” a Downing Street spokesman added.
Lancaster police said they are “aware of the situation” and will “investigate the incident.” A passenger in a vehicle caught without a seatbelt in Britain is fined £100. If the case goes to court, this fine is increased to £500.
