Helicopter crashed near Kiev. Minister among the dead

At least 18 people, including three children, were killed when an emergency services helicopter crashed near a kindergarten in Brovary, on the outskirts of Kiev, Ukrainian authorities said on Wednesday. Interior Minister Denis Monastyrsky, 42, is one of the fatalities, the head of Ukraine’s national police confirmed. Initially, Ukrainian authorities reported 16 dead.

Interior Ministry adviser Anton Gerashchenko spoke of “tragic losses” in confirming the deaths of the three members of the government.

The Ukrainian president called the accident a “terrible tragedy”. “The pain is indescribable,” Volodymyr Zelensky said on Facebook.

Nine of the fatalities were on board the helicopter, the head of Ukraine’s national police said.

The circumstances leading to the crash of the helicopter are not yet known and information about the type of aircraft has not yet been released.

Police said the helicopter crash caused a fire.

The first information was released by the Ukrainian presidency, which already pointed to the existence of victims.

The city of Brovary is located about 20 kilometers from Kiev. Russian and Ukrainian forces fought for control of Brovary in the early stages of the war, lasting from February 24 until Russian forces withdrew in early April.
