At least 10 dead when building collapses in Aleppo

At least ten people have been killed and dozens more are missing under the rubble of a building that collapsed from unknown causes in the northern Syrian province of Aleppo, according to several Syrian sources.

The five-story building, which collapsed early this morning, is located in the Sheikh Masoud neighborhood, an area controlled by Syrian Kurdish forces, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said in a statement.

“The building houses five families of 23 people, most of them still buried under the rubble,” said the observatory, based in the United Kingdom, but which has a wide network of collaborators in the different Syrian provinces.

The organization also highlighted that the ten people who lost their lives in the collapse were displaced from the city of Afrin, an area located in the far northwest of Syria, seized from Kurdish forces by Turkish troops and allied militias in 2018.

According to the observatory, local rescue teams managed to rescue a 15-year-old boy alive, while search operations continue for more than 20 people believed to still be under the rubble.

The NGO shows images of the rubble of what was a five-story building, in which ambulances and heavy rescue teams used to lift cement blocks can be seen, as well as dozens of people participating in rescue operations.

The independent Syrian television channel Al Alam confirmed on its Twitter account the death of at least ten people, including a child, in the collapse of the building, citing a source in the Aleppo police, and attributed the cause of the collapse to ” A leak”. of water in the foundation of the building”.
