The death toll from Saturday’s shooting at a town hall in Monterey Park, California, during Lunar New Year celebrations rose to 11 after a person with gunshot wounds succumbed to his injuries, local authorities said Monday.
The 72-year-old shooting suspect was found dead after committing suicide in a white pickup truck after a chase with police, the local sheriff said Sunday.
“The suspect sustained gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene,” said Sheriff Robert Luna, who described a pursuit that ended with the man being shot from inside the white pickup truck, who apparently committed suicide.
The latter, of Asian origin and 72 years old, was identified as Huu Can Tran. He was the sole suspect in the shooting, Robert Luna said, adding that the motive for the attack, which occurred in Monterey Park on Lunar New Year’s Day, was not yet known and an investigation was underway.
