Bilateral meetings mark Sergei Lavrov’s working visit to Angola

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov begins today a working visit to Angola, where he arrived on Tuesday evening, to meet with his counterpart Téte António and Angolan President João Lourenço.

The head of Russian diplomacy, accompanied by his delegation, will meet in the morning with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Téte António, before an audience with the Angolan Head of State, João Lourenço.

According to the distributed program, at 12:30 the Russian minister will visit the Dr. António Agostinho Neto, as well as the tomb of former Angolan President José Eduardo dos Santos, who died on July 8 last year.

Lavrov will soon follow for a tour of the National Museum of Military History and will stop for lunch at the Embassy School of the Russian Federation.

The diplomat will return to Moscow on Thursday morning.

The working visit by the Head of Foreign Affairs comes at a time when Angola, after speaking neutral on the war in Ukraine and abstaining from voting on a United Nations resolution condemning Russia’s invasion in March, has moved on in October joined most countries that condemned the annexation of Ukrainian territories by Russia.

In recent months, Angola has repositioned itself in terms of foreign policy, closer to the United States of America and the European Union, and distanced itself from Russia.
