‘The equivalent of a Ukrainian battalion’: Biden announces delivery of 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine

Following an announcement of the delivery of Leopard 2 tanks from Germany in the morning, a statement from the US president to the same effect was expected.

After Germany, the United States. The president of the United States, Joe Biden, announced on Wednesday the shipment of 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, “the equivalent of a Ukrainian battalion”, a delivery that should take place within several months. These are the “most powerful tanks in the whole world,” according to him.

The Ukrainians “must be able to defend themselves against Russian aggression in the long term,” declared Joe Biden who, with this shipment, intends to “strengthen Ukraine’s ability to defend its territory.”

“It will take time to deliver these tanks,” the US president added, because Ukrainian soldiers will need to be trained in their use “and their maintenance as soon as possible,” Joe Biden announced.

“No offensive threat to Russia”

This announcement comes as Germany has just given its approval to send Leopard 2 heavy tanks to Ukraine after weeks of delay. Until recently, the United States said it was not prepared to provide its most advanced heavy tanks, the Abrams, to Ukraine to fight the Russian invasion, justifying this refusal on maintenance and training issues.

Ukraine, for its part, has been asking the Westerners for weeks for modern tanks to repel the invasion.

On Wednesday, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz gave his assent, saying he wanted to avoid “an escalation” that would lead to war between Russia and NATO. Moscow, for its part, denounced an “extremely dangerous” decision.

“It is not an aggression, there is no offensive threat against Russia”, Joe Biden assured this Wednesday, “today we wish the end of this war”.
