Transgender rapist in Scotland won’t stay in women’s prison

A transgender woman convicted of raping two women before transitioning from male to female will not serve her sentence in a women’s prison, Scottish Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed.

“It would be inappropriate to give details of where a prisoner is being held, but given the understandable public and parliamentary concern, I can confirm that she will not be held at Cornton Vale Women’s Prison,” Sturgeon announced, referring to the prison where the prisoner was held. transgender was transferred Tuesday after his conviction.

Isla Bryson, whose sentence will be known in February, turned from male to female while awaiting trial in two rape cases involving two women, one in 2016 and another in 2019, when she was still answering to Adam Graham’s name .

At trial, Bryson said he found out he was transgender at the age of four, but it wasn’t until he was 29, two years ago, that he decided to take hormones and have surgery.

However, Bryson’s wife told the newspaper daily mail that the sex change was nothing more than a “hoax” to mislead the authorities, a “trick” to avoid ending up in jail surrounded by “big, scary men” and thus get “a more bearable punishment”.

Where Bryson will serve her sentence was hotly debated even before a court found her guilty on Tuesday, with various political and social groups discussing the risks to the safety of other women if she were held in prison.

Bryson has been in that prison, the only women’s prison in Scotland, since the rape allegations.

The case was raised in Holyrood – the Scottish Parliament – by Conservative leader Douglas Ross, who guaranteed that Bryson is a “beast” who only started to change gender after police allegations.

Labor MPs also took the same view, with Yvette Cooper saying Bryson was a “dangerous rapist” who should not be in a women’s prison.

“If someone is a danger to women and has committed crimes against them, they shouldn’t be in a women’s prison,” the Labor MP underlined.
