Angola raised 1.7 billion euros in 2022 with the sale of diamonds

Angola raised $1.95 billion (1.7 billion euros) in 2022 from the export of about 8.75 million carats of diamonds, the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas said on Friday.

According to Alexandre Garret, of the total diamonds produced last year, 8.71 million carats came from industrial production and the rest of the semi-industrial.

Alexandre Garret, who took stock of the production, marketing and export of diamonds in 2022, noted that the Catoca mine led the production, with about 64.82% of the total production volume.

“Compared to 2021, there was an increase in the volume produced by about 0.37%,” Alexandre Garret said in statements to Angolan Public Television.

In terms of the amount raised, there was also an increase of 1.38% compared to 2021, with the United Arab Emirates, with 67.91%, Belgium with 21.25% and China with 10.82% as the main destination countries of the export.

The official noted that despite the relative growth, the market was in deficit last year due to the sanctions imposed on diamonds from Russia, which led to an increase in demand for this product in the international market and an increase of the prices.
