Ten children, between the ages of 7 and 14, drowned this Sunday in a lake in Pakistan, during a school trip in which some three dozen students from a Koranic school participated.
The news was reported by the local police who, according to the news agency France Presse (AFP), revealed that a rescue operation was being carried out in the lake of the Tanda dam, in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, to try to rescue the approximately 30 children who participated in a school trip.
So far, 11 children have been saved, six of whom are in serious condition.
According to AFP, “mass drownings are common in Pakistan, where overcrowded and overloaded ships can lose their balance, causing passengers to fall.”
Many Pakistanis do not know how to swim, especially women, who are put off by their country’s conservative customs, and their full-body suits also make swimming difficult, becoming very heavy when wet.
In July, 18 women drowned when a boat sank in the Indus River in Punjab province while they were celebrating a wedding.
