NATO says Russia is not honoring its nuclear treaty obligations with the US

NATO on Friday ruled that Russia had failed to fulfill several New Start treaty obligations, such as facilitating inspections by the United States since late summer last year.

According to a joint statement, member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) pointed out that the New Start (New Beginning) treaty “contributed to international stability through the constriction of Russian and US nuclear forces”.

However, Moscow “has failed to fulfill its obligations” under this agreement.

“Russia’s refusal to allow a session of the Bilateral Consultative Commission within the deadlines set and to allow US inspections in the territory [russo] since August 2022, has prevented the United States from exercising key rights under the treaty, and undermined the United States’ ability to adequately verify Russian commitments within the treaty boundaries.” supports the note released to the media.

Washington, on the other hand, guarantees the military alliance, adheres to the provisions of the treaty.

NATO adds that compliance with this treaty by both parties is “essential to the security objectives” of the military alliance (which includes the United States and most of the European Union countries).

The treaty was extended for another five years in 2021, but NATO believed Moscow’s failure “could make it unfeasible”.

“We call on Russia to fulfill its obligations under the treaty by enabling inspections on Russian territory.” completed the organization of which Portugal is also a part.
