163 migrants rescued from the sea in the Canary Islands

Three small boats with 163 sub-Saharan migrants, some of them minors, were rescued from the sea near the Canary Islands, two near Lanzarote and another south of Gran Canaria, the Maritime Rescue authorities reported.

The information is provided by the EFE news agency, according to which, around 10:35 local time, the Sasemar 103 maritime rescue plane sighted a vessel 90 miles from Gran Canaria.

The Polyhymnia rescue ship moved to the scene and rescued 51 people, of whom 42 were men and nine women.

The Polimnia is heading to the port of Arguineguín, in the south of Gran Canaria, where it is expected to arrive around 7:50 p.m. local time.

Hours earlier, the EFE agency had reported that, at around 12:50 local time, Salvamento Marítimo had rescued 58 migrants -a minor, 12 women and 45 men- aboard an inflatable boat 2.6 kilometers from Lanzarote.

The rescue occurred after a notice was received by the Las Palmas Maritime Rescue Center warning of the sighting of a boat leaving the Moroccan city of Tan-Tan, bound for the coast of Lanzarote.

After that rescue, four miles from Arrecife (Lanzarote), the same rescue ship Caliope rescued another 54 sub-Saharan migrants -48 men, three minors and three women- four miles from Arrecife (Lanzarote), according to updated information from Eph. agency. .

The migrants from the last two boats disembarked in Arrecife around 3:30 p.m. local time.
