Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky was invited to attend a European Council summit in person, an official body source revealed, with the next scheduled for Thursday and Friday in Brussels.
The President of the European Council [Charles Michel] invited President Zelensky to personally attend a future European Council summit,” Council spokesperson Barend Leyts said on Twitter.
The spokesperson added that “for security reasons no additional information will be made available”.
Today, European sources reported that Zelensky’s participation in Thursday’s European Council meeting was being considered and that the Ukrainian president would also attend an extraordinary session of the European Parliament in Brussels.
Last week, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Council and the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell, were in Kiev for the EU-Ukraine Summit, which took place for security reasons without the Heads of State or Government of the 27.
Since the start of the war on February 24 last year, Zelensky has left the country only once, in late December, to address the US Congress in Washington DC and to meet with US President Joe Biden.
