Emmanuel Macron published on Monday his agreement with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on military support for Ukraine, despite rather tense relations between the two leaders, particularly on the issue of migrants.
The French president and the head of the Italian government spoke by phone and “welcomed the joint action of France and Italy to support Ukraine at the military level, in particular the decision taken jointly at the end of last week to provide a SAMP / T – MAMBA air defense system, which will fully meet the priority needs expressed by Kyiv,” Elysée reported.
Before the European summit on Thursday and Friday in Brussels, “the two leaders expressed their determination to continue this long-term support,” added the French presidency.
“Give a concrete signal of full support to Ukraine”
Giorgia Meloni’s services confirmed that she had underlined “the priority for the European Council to give a concrete signal of full 360-degree support to Ukraine.” This topic was also at the center of her telephone conversations with her Dutch counterparts Mark Rutte, the Austrian Karl Nehammer and the Greek Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Emmanuel Macron and Giorgia Meloni also discussed the other issues on the Brussels summit agenda, including “strengthening European industrial policy” and “migration”, according to Paris.
Rome spoke of the need for a “ultimately European management of migratory flows”, focusing in particular on “border control”.
