At least six people have been killed by storms and landslides triggered by heavy rains that have hit Brazil’s southeastern state of Rio de Janeiro since Tuesday.
Among the victims is a two-year-old girl who died in the Tijuca neighborhood, after the house where she was found collapsed, following a landslide, Agencia Brasil reported Wednesday.
According to the public news agency, the mother managed to save herself, but the girl was dragged away. The family had moved into the house just three days before the tragedy.
An 82-year-old man died buried under another landslide in the southern zone of Rio de Janeiro, while two other people died on the outskirts of the city after being struck by lightning.
Likewise, in Ribeira das Neves, 400 kilometers northwest of Rio, a 22-year-old girl died buried after the house where she lived was also hit by a landslide.
In the same city, a man was found dead after being swept away by a jet of water, according to Agência Brasil.
