Father and daughter rescued in Turkey after 90 hours under rubble

Turkish emergency teams managed to rescue a father and daughter some 90 hours after they were buried under the rubble of a building destroyed by Monday’s earthquakes.

Search and rescue teams found the two survivors on Thursday in the city of Odabasi, in Turkey’s southern Hatay province, near the Syrian border, Turkey’s state news agency Anatolia reported.

After receiving first aid, the father and his 5-year-old daughter were taken to a hospital.

While experts say people can survive for a week or more, the chances of finding survivors in sub-zero temperatures are dwindling.

The average time a person can stay alive without ingesting water or food in disasters like an earthquake is 72 hours, but operations continue to find earthquake survivors in Turkey and Syria.

Turkish authorities said more than 120,000 rescue teams are taking part in the efforts, with more than 5,500 vehicles and help from 95 countries, including Portugal and Brazil.

Aerial images show the extent of the devastation, with entire high-rise neighborhoods reduced to twisted metal, shotcrete and exposed power lines.

More than 20,400 people died in the violent earthquake that struck southeastern Turkey and northern Syria on Monday, according to official figures released Thursday night.
