At least 48 people were arrested for looting in eight provinces affected by the earthquake that struck Turkey on Monday, Turkey’s Anadolu news agency reported on Saturday.
The suspects were detained as part of investigations into the robberies that followed the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale that killed more than 25,000 people in Turkey and Syria.
Another ten people linked to the construction industry were also arrested in Turkey, after the collapse of thousands of buildings, including a businessman from the province of Gaziantep.
The brutal collapse of the buildings, which betrays their poor construction, reducing the chances of survival of its inhabitants, sparked an uprising in the country, where around 22,000 people died and more than 80,000 were injured.
Syria and Turkey suffered an earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale early Monday morning, which was followed by several aftershocks, one of them measuring 7.5.
