At least three people were killed and five injured in a gun attack at Michigan State University, police said.
The suspect in Monday’s attack, a man of “short stature” wearing “a mask”, fled as a major police operation was mounted.
Authorities indicated that the person was “off campus” at the university. The “suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” said Chris Rozman of the university police, quoted by AFP.
He also pointed out that some of the five injured are still at “risk of death”.
“This has really been a nightmare that we went through last night,” said Chris Rozman.
Hundreds of officers roamed the East Lansing university campus, 90 miles northwest of Detroit, looking for the suspect.
The 43-year-old man was confronted by police off campus before committing suicide with a gun, Rozman said.
“We have no idea why he came to campus tonight to do this. This is part of the ongoing investigation,” he added.
Located in the city of East Lansing, the university is one of the largest in the country, with more than 50,000 students.
