Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday updated the death toll in his country from last week’s earthquake to 35,814 dead and 105,000 injured, saying it was the most serious national disaster in the last century.
Erdogan, speaking after a five-hour meeting with the government, said it was the most serious disaster to hit Turkey in the last hundred years, with the 1939 Erzican earthquake killing 33,000 people.
Some 13,000 people remain hospitalized and the authorities are still trying to find survivors, as happened today with a father and son, rescued alive after being buried for 209 hours.
