Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksi Reznikov acknowledged on Wednesday that “time is needed” to train the army in the use of Western weapons, but that this will allow it to launch a major offensive against Russia.
Reznikov admitted that the weapons promised by the West “cannot enter Ukraine in any form” and that Ukrainian troops “must be prepared” to use tanks and artillery systems.
For the Ukrainian minister, the possibility of Kiev preparing a major counter-offensive largely depends on the arrival of Western tanks and weapons, as well as the ability to train the army in their use.
“Time is needed. We are talking about a few months, when we will be completely ready. And then certain events will take place, according to the decision of the General Staff”underlined Reznikov in statements to Ukrinform news agency.
Ukraine awaits the arrival on its territory of dozens of Western tanks, mainly the German model Leopard, promised by several European countries, after weeks of tension between Berlin and Kiev over the refusal of the Germans to give the green light to these deliveries.
The Russian military offensive on Ukrainian territory, launched on February 24 last year, plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
