Bulgaria delays entry into the eurozone for not meeting criteria

Bulgaria has decided to postpone the date on which it can enter the eurozone by one year, until 2025, by not meeting the necessary criteria or passing the necessary legislation, Finance Minister Rositsa Velkova said on Friday.

The minister said that the Government will present a convergence report when it meets the criteria and has modified the law that regulates the central bank, which has to wait for Parliament, which will come out of the elections next April.

Bulgaria, plunged into a political crisis two years ago, has to pass four bills and meet the inflation criteria.

“If this happens at the end of June or July, we can send a report immediately and not wait for normality. This means that we could enter the euro zone no later than January 1, 2025,” he said, quoted by the agency. Eph. .

“Our European partners consider that we are behind in the legislative part related to the approval of the necessary bills, modifications to the insurance code and measures to combat money laundering,” he added.

The government of Bulgaria, the poorest country in the European Union, has been interim since last October and Parliament currently has no authority to pass laws, with elections scheduled for April 2.
