Former US President Jimmy Carter receives hospice care at home

Former US President Jimmy Carter, 98, is receiving hospice care at home, where he will spend the rest of his life, the foundation that bears his name said on Saturday.

“After a series of brief hospital stays, former US President Jimmy Carter decided today to spend his remaining time at home with his family and receive hospice care rather than further medical intervention,” the Carter Center wrote on Twitter.

Carter is the oldest living former president of the United States. He lives in Plains, Georgia, with his wife, Rosalynn. It was also in this state that he was born and worked as a peanut farmer before becoming governor and later running for president.

“The Carter family requests privacy and appreciates the concern shown by many fans. He has the full support of his family and medical team,” the foundation said.

Architect of the Camp David Accords, which led to the signing of the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt in March 1979, the Democrat was harshly criticized in the US during the taking of US hostages in Iran between 1979 and 1980. Leaving the White House, he founded The Carter Center in 1982 to promote development, health, and conflict resolution throughout the world.

In 2022, he received the Nobel Peace Prize for “decades of tireless effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts.” Three years earlier, he had several health problems that forced him to be hospitalized on multiple occasions.
