Shooting during Carnival celebrations leaves four dead and 16 injured in the north of Rio de Janeiro

At least four people died and 16 were injured after a shooting during Carnival celebrations on Mauá beach, in the city of Magé, located in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro. Among the fatalities there is a child, according to the Brazilian press.

The shooting originated from a misunderstanding between the shooter and a policeman, in one of the blocks where a carnival parade was taking place. Witnesses say the number of victims could rise. Videos posted on social media show several people wounded by gunshots, some seriously. The victims were treated at two hospitals in the city.

The prefecture of Magé, a city located in the north of the state of Rio de Janeiro, has already requested the cancellation of all carnival parades. In a statement on social networks, the City Council explains that “despite not promoting the carnival, it supported the blocks, with more than 40 men from the Civil Guard and Public Order and 120 private security guards.”
