Spain will send six ‘Leopard 2A4’ tanks to Ukraine that are no longer in use and will be repaired by the Spanish army, the defense minister announced on Wednesday.
“Spain is repairing a platoon” of six Leopard 2A4 tanks “to update and integrate them with other” vehicles from western countries in Ukraine, Margarita Robles told Parliament, without giving details of the timeline for the delivery of armored personnel carriers. vehicles.
The Spanish minister also assured that “if necessary” and other countries cooperating militarily with Ukraine, Madrid will therefore be able to repair other tanks of this type in order to send them to Kiev.
Stored at a military base in Zaragoza, in northern Spain, some of the ‘Leopard 2A4’ were “disused because they had not been repaired since 1990”, stressed the minister, who had already referred to the “regrettable condition” of some of these tanks.
After being pressured to send tanks to Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday at the Munich security conference called on his allies to deliver the promised tanks to Kiev.
Military aid to Ukraine “implies that anyone who can provide such battle tanks actually does so,” Scholz said.
According to some experts, the “Leopard” tanks can have a decisive effect on the battlefield and are expected by Ukrainian troops, who fear a major Russian military offensive in the coming weeks.
