An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck Tajikistan on Thursday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The earthquake was registered at 05:37 (00:37 in Lisbon), at a depth of 20.5 kilometers.
The USGS estimated that “few if any residents” will be exposed to landslides caused by the earthquake.
The epicenter was located in Gorno-Badakhshan, a semi-autonomous region in the east that borders Afghanistan and China.
A magnitude 5 aftershock struck the region about 20 minutes after the initial quake.
The sparsely populated area is surrounded by the Pamir Mountains.
