The reception of the Ukrainians was “very well organized” by the authorities and benefited from a wave of solidarity, welcomed this Thursday after a year of conflict the main organizations of the Ukrainian community in France, which calls for the “remobilization” of citizen accommodation which is “running out of steam”.
110,000 Ukrainian refugees welcomed in France
A year after the outbreak of the war on February 24, about 110,000 displaced persons from Ukraine have settled in France, according to the government, mostly women and children.
“The reception of the Ukrainians in France was very well organized from the beginning. There was an excellent reception by the government and the French,” said the president of the Union of Ukrainians of France, Jean-Pierre Pasternak, during a conference press that brought together a dozen organizations.
A 6-month renewable residence permit
Displaced Ukrainians benefit from a six-month renewable residence permit in France under the “temporary protection” granted by Europe, which offers them freedom of settlement and access to an unprecedented set of social rights (work, health, schooling, aid home, etc.). ). More than 30,000 of them are staying with hosts who are French citizens, according to authorities.
“There is a logical breathlessness in this solidarity, which was very important from the beginning. That is why we call for the remobilization of the Ukrainians”, summed up Jean-Pierre Pasternak.
Rapid integration, frustrated assimilation
These displaced persons are torn between the need to integrate and the “desire to return to the country,” Daniel Sztul, spokesman for the Representation Committee of the Ukrainian community in France, also told AFP.
The arrival of about 110,000 Ukrainians in recent months has almost doubled the community in France, where they “find employment” -20,000 are already working according to the Interior Ministry- and “integrate” quickly, Daniel Sztul explained. But, he pointed out, “the phenomenon of assimilation is more complicated” for these exiles in a context of “exacerbated patriotism” in a context of war.
