Turkey announces it is resuming negotiations with Finland and Sweden

Negotiations between Turkey, Sweden and Finland over the two countries’ accession to NATO will resume on March 9, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu announced Monday.

“The meeting will take place on March 9”, Cavusoglu said at a press conference in Ankara.

In January, Turkey ended tripartite talks after announcing demonstrations in February against Ankara and against Islam in Stockholm.

The accession processes of the two Nordic countries to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization stem from the latest Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24 last year.

Turkey and Hungary are two of the 30 NATO countries that have not ratified Finland and Sweden’s membership application.

The Ankara government, among other measures, is demanding that both countries take a new attitude towards Kurdish refugees, especially members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, which Turkey considers a “terrorist” organization.
