British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a “new chapter” in relations with the European Union (EU) on Monday, unveiling a new deal at a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. . .
“I am pleased to report that we have now made a breakthrough. Together we have changed the original protocol,” Rishi Sunak said, referring to the Northern Ireland Protocol to the UK Withdrawal Agreement.
Monday’s agreement “provides for smooth trade across the UK, protects Northern Ireland’s place in our union and safeguards the sovereignty of the people of Northern Ireland,” the British prime minister said.
Three years after the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union (‘Brexit’), the Northern Ireland protocol has been the main issue of tension between London and Brussels.
