“I don’t see the possibility of a serious negotiation.” Guterres pessimistic about the war in Ukraine

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed his pessimism about the short-term end of the war in Ukraine and urged China to restore conditions for respecting the human rights of the Uyghur Muslim community.

“The Russians and the Ukrainians believe that they can win the war. I do not see any possibility, in the short term, of a serious negotiation,” the Portuguese diplomat said in an interview with RFI, who acknowledged that the objective now is to look for alternatives to alleviate the consequences of a war that will last a long time.

He spoke, for example, of the acceleration of grain and fertilizer exports from Ukraine and Russia because there are countries that are experiencing difficulties, especially in Africa.

Regarding the mass grave with 440 graves discovered on Friday in the Ukrainian city of Izium, in the Kharkiv region, Guterres said he hopes the International Criminal Court can investigate to determine responsibility.

After learning of the report made public by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michele Bachelet, who was highly critical of the Chinese government’s policies in the Xinjiang region and the Uyghur ethnic group, Guterres appealed to Beijing to “restore the conditions” so that this ethnic group “can” enforce their human rights.

“Even more importantly, this community can feel that their cultural and religious identity is respected and that they can participate in society. [chinesa] like an everything. I hope that this issue, which I think is fundamental, will be resolved,” Guterres said.
