Train crash in Greece was due to ‘human error’

The collision of two trains in Greece on Tuesday night, in which 38 people died, was due to “a tragic human error,” Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced Wednesday.

“Everything indicates that the drama was unfortunately due to a tragic human error,” explained the head of government the day after the rail accident that, according to a new count, left 38 dead and several dozen injured.

The Minister of Transport, Kostas Karamanlis, had announced his resignation after this accident between a passenger train that connected Athens with Thessaloniki, in the north of the country, and a freight train.

The two trains collided head-on when they were on the same track.

The station manager of Larissa, the closest town to the accident, in central Greece, has been arrested today and is charged with “negligent homicide” and having caused “bodily harm”.

Mitsotakis said most of the victims were “young” as many students were returning to Thessaloniki after a long weekend on Monday, a public holiday in Greece.

“We owe these victims an honest response,” added the head of government in a brief televised speech.

The controversy has grown today in volume due to the state of the railway network, which many consider neglected.

The president of the train drivers’ union, Kostas Genidounias, denounced the lack of security on this line that connects the two main cities of Greece.
