China’s president was unanimously re-elected today for a third five-year term.
Xi Jinping, 69, had already been granted a five-year extension in October to head the Chinese Communist Party (CPC) and military commission, the country’s two most powerful positions.
The president consolidated his power after the National People’s Congress (NPC), China’s highest legislative body, nominated him for a third term, until 2028, a first among his predecessors, following a constitutional amendment in 2018 that eliminated him. two consecutive five-year terms for Chinese heads of state.
The president’s control over the three branches of power – the state, the PCC and the military – was thus strengthened.
The plenary also approved the appointments of Han Zheng (Vice Chairman) and Zhao Leji (Chairman of the NPC Standing Committee).
At the end of the polls, Xi, Han and Zhao swear to China’s constitution.
