Former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis was attacked Friday night at a restaurant in Athens, suffering a broken nose, while dining with members of the DiEM25 political movement from across Europe.
According to the digital newspaper ekathimerini.com, a small group stormed through the premises of the restaurant in the Greek capital, in the Exarchia district, shouting aggressively and falsely accusing Varoufakis of, as finance minister of the Syriza government, led by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras signed the bailout agreements for Greece with the troika.
Varoufakis – current secretary general of the left-wing Greek political party MeRA25 (European Realist Disobedience Front), which is part of the pan-European political movement DiEM25 (Movement Democracy in Europe 2025, which he launched) – stood up to admit members speak of the group, but they immediately responded with violence, beating him and breaking his nose. while filming the scene with a mobile phone.
The Greek leftist deputy was transported to Evangelismos Hospital in the center of the capital to be examined and presumably to have his nose splinted.
On the social network Twitter, Government spokesman Giannis Oikonomou responded almost immediately, writing: “We categorically condemn the attack on Foreign Minister [partido] MeRA25, Mr Y. Varoufakis”.
“Banditry has no place in our democracy and no form of violence will be tolerated,” he added.
“The Greek police will do whatever is necessary to bring the perpetrators to justice,” Oikonomou said in the next post.

The Athenian neighborhood of Exarchia is widely known as a stronghold of anarchists who, although most don’t live there, act as owners of the place and often “approach unwanted people who had the guts”, according to the anarchists, to appear there, explains the digital newspaper ekahimerini.com, adding that “leftists are no more tolerated than rightists”.
