Burma. Deposed leader sentenced to three years in prison for reader fraud

A court in Myanmar (formerly Burma) has sentenced the country’s former civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, to three years in prison for electoral fraud.

The decision adds more jail time to 17-year-old Suu Kyi who is already serving other offences.

Suu Kyi’s party won the 2020 general election with a landslide. The military took power in a coup on February 1, 2021, justified by alleged electoral fraud.

Independent election monitors found no significant irregularities.

Two members of Suu Kyi’s former government were co-suspected in the case and were also sentenced to three years in prison.

The survival of the National League for Democracy party, led by Suu Kyi, is in jeopardy, especially after explicit threats from the military junta to dissolve the party before new elections, which the military has promised for 2023.
