Gary Glitter, a former British pop star sentenced in 2015 to 16 years in prison for sexually assaulting three minors, was jailed again on Monday for violating the conditions of his release, according to probation services.
Released on February 3, the 79-year-old former singer, whose real name is Paul Gadd, was convicted in 2015 of attempted rape, four indecent assaults and having sex with a minor.
He was released from prison halfway through his term, after eight years behind bars.
“Protecting the public is our number one priority, which is why we set strict release conditions and when offenders break them, we don’t hesitate to return them to custody,” a Probation Services spokesperson said.
A “repeat sexual predator”
Gary Glitter was at the height of fame when he approached these minors.
The former ‘glam rock’ star, who had been branded by police as a ‘repeated sexual predator’, had assaulted two girls, aged 12 and 13, luring them into his dressing room and isolating them from their mothers.
The youngest victim was less than 10 years old when he tried to rape her in 1975.
Gary Glitter, “glitter” in English, was arrested on October 28, 2012 in London, while pedophilia scandals involving former showbiz glories multiplied in the United Kingdom.
He had already been arrested in 1997 and sentenced to four months in prison for downloading child pornography onto his computer.
Fleeing from the press, he took refuge in Cambodia, from where he was expelled in 2002 accused of pedophilia.
He was then sentenced in 2006 to three years in prison in Vietnam for lewd acts with two minors. After serving a sentence of two years and nine months, he returned to the UK in 2008.
Gary Glitter had his moment of glory in the 1970s, notably with his title “I’m the gang leader (I am).”
