Two people died and nine were injured after a van hit pedestrians walking along a road in Amqui, a city in eastern Quebec, on Monday, Canadian authorities said.
A police spokeswoman in that province said at least nine people were injured, two of them seriously, the AP reported.
The 38-year-old driver of the van turned himself in to police and was arrested on suspicion of a fatal hit-and-run, said spokeswoman Hélène St-Pierre, quoted by AFP.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the hit-and-run, he added.
A Canadian official linked to the case, who spoke on condition of anonymity, assured the AP that the accident was not related to terrorism or national security.
