The European Parliament votes on the implementation of the UK Withdrawal Agreement

The European Parliament votes this Wednesday, in plenary session, on the report that assesses the implementation of the UK withdrawal agreement. The document, whose rapporteur is the PS MEP, Pedro Silva Pereira, aims to take stock of the application of the rules of engagement between Brussels and London.

“We are three years away from the departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union. And then the main issues were citizens, in which it was possible to guarantee the safeguarding of the residence rights of European citizens residing in the United Kingdom, but the great issue, the essential area of confrontation, was related to the protocol of Northern Ireland”, considers the Socialist MEP, stressing that London never fulfilled its part.

Despite the deadlock, last month it was possible for the United Kingdom and the European Union to reach an agreement. Pedro Silva Pereira believes that the decision allows to put an end to the uncertainty between the two blocks. “We hope that the document agreed between the president of the Commission and the prime minister, Rishi Sunak, can guarantee the essential, that the products that come from the United Kingdom and have the EU as their destination, are subject to controls,” he said. he says.

Three years after the formalization of Brexit, Pedro Silva Pereira does not rule out the return of the British to the EU. The question for now is “permanent”, despite the fact that Brexit has not brought anything good for the United Kingdom.

“The illusions of Brexit are in sight. The economic effects of Brexit are deeply disappointing. The British economy is the only one not growing among the G7 countries.”
