Syria recognizes annexed Ukrainian regions as Russian

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad recognizes as “Russian territories” the four Ukrainian regions annexed by that country in September last year following referenda rejected by the West.

“These are Russian territories and even if the war had not started, historically they are Russian territories,” he said in an interview with the official Russian news agency RIA Novosti during his official visit to Russia.

The Syrian president said his regime recognized the regions of Lugansk and Donetsk in eastern Ukraine and Kherson and Zaporizhia in the south and southeast, respectively, before it “joined Russia”.

“Because referenda were held there, the results of which were announced, and we recognize them,” said the Syrian head of state, adding that Syria’s position on the issue is “clear and firm” not only in the name of friendship with Russia . , “but also because these areas are Russian”.

According to Al-Assad, there will be more peace and security in the world after Russia’s victory in Ukraine.

“This particular war is going to change the world balance, as part of what Syria, Iraq and many other countries have suffered is the result of a unipolar world. When the Russian Federation wins this war, as most Syrians want, there will be a new, safer and more peaceful world,” he said.

This view of the conflict, according to Al-Assad, is one of the reasons why the Syrian people “have come to support Russia, and another is the solidarity that Russia has shown to Syria in its fight against terrorism”.

According to the Syrian president, there are no official fighters from his country fighting alongside Russia in the war in Ukraine, but they may be unofficial.
