The French deputies are gathered in the chamber, where two motions of censure will be presented that could overthrow the Government of Elizabeth Borne, and that would lead to the withdrawal of the reform of the pension system. The vote takes place at 18:00 local time (17:00 in Lisbon). Meanwhile, the French mobilized against the text hold their breath.
Thousands of people have been protesting in the streets since last Thursday. Will the protests be enough for some deputies to vote in favor of the motions presented by the opposition? The scenario is unlikely for most protesters.
The political game began with the appeal of constitutional article 3 of article 49.
“I don’t believe in this game. I think it’s just a show because what they want is for the government to fall, but then Emmanuel Macron calls and creates alliances with the right wing of the Republicans. This motion only leads to an alliance. in front of the door waiting a long time to enter the Government ”, defends Mathieu, a protester who believes that the motion of censure can be approved, but without consequences.
Contrary to what might be expected, the opposition hopes to recover the necessary votes to dismiss the right-wing government of “Os Republicanos. We will not stop until the reform is withdrawn,” argues Yves, a SUD trade unionist.
Jean, retired, expresses his solidarity with the social movement, defends that there are other fronts to this reform: “We have the institutional side, then the Constitutional Council or even the referendum, but deep down, perhaps one day Emmanuel Macron will understand that what matters is to represent all the French”.
A criticism directed at Emmanuel Macron. “We have one last option: that the law is not enacted and let’s imagine that Emmanuel Macron is as smart as he thinks he is and decides not to enact this law,” says Vincent.
Whatever happens this afternoon, those thousands of French mobilized since January want to believe that all is not entirely lost.
