Joe Biden said Friday in Ottawa that “the United States does not seek conflict with Iran” after ordering US airstrikes in Syria the day before that killed pro-Iranian fighters.
“Make no mistake, the United States is not seeking conflict with Iran, but it is prepared to act forcefully to protect its people,” he told a joint news conference with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
14 pro-Iranian fighters killed by US strikes
Fourteen pro-Iranian fighters were killed by US airstrikes in eastern Syria overnight from Thursday to Friday, carried out in response to a drone strike that killed one American and wounded six others.
The drone strike took place on Thursday against a maintenance facility at a base near Al-Hasakah, killing a US contractor and wounding five US soldiers and another contractor, according to the Pentagon.
In response, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he had authorized “precision airstrikes” in eastern Syria “against facilities used by groups affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.”
