The death toll in the US state of Mississippi rose to 13 on Saturday after a strong tornado struck last night, Sharkey County Medical Examiner Angelia Easton told ABC News.
The tornado also struck the state of Alabama, destroying buildings and knocking out power in some areas, while hail the size of golf balls formed.
The US National Weather Service confirmed the storm left a trail of destruction about 60 miles northeast of Jackson, the Mississippi capital.
Sharkey-Issaquena Community Hospital on the west side of Rolling Fork in the county was damaged.
Local police reported gas leaks and people trapped in piles of rubble, according to the Vicksburg News.
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves wrote on Twitter late Friday that search and rescue teams were active and more ambulances and emergency supplies were being dispatched to affected people.
