The principal of a Florida public school was forced to resign after a parent complained that 11- and 12-year-old boys were exposed to pornography in a Renaissance art class that featured Miguel’s “David” sculpture. Angel.
According to the Tallahassee Democrat newspaper, Tallahassee Classical School Principal Hope Carrasquilla resigned this week following an ultimatum from the school board president.
One parent complained that the material was pornographic and two other parents said they wanted to be notified about the lesson before giving it to their children, Hope Carrasquilla explained.
The art class also included Michelangelo’s painting “The Creation of Adam” and Botticelli’s “Birth of Venus.”
“It saddens me that my time here [na escola] it ended like this,” Hope Carrasquilla told the newspaper.
The nudity of the “David” statue is part of a centuries-old debate about whether art crosses the limits and rules of censorship.
In the 16th century, metal fig leaves covered the genitals of statues like David’s, when the Roman Catholic Church considered nudity obscene.
The Florida riot also led social media users to point to similarities to a 1990s episode of “The Simpsons,” where characters debated the censorship of the “David” statue.
