Six people died and 12 were injured this Monday in a suicide attack near the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kabul, official sources and witnesses told the EFE news agency.
“A suicide bomber was detained by security forces before reaching his target, a checkpoint, and detonated the explosives he was carrying, killing six people and injuring several more,” said Khalid Zadran, a spokesman for the capital’s police. , on the social network Twitter.
Afghan television Tolo News reported that at least 12 people were injured, citing the Italian non-governmental organization (NGO) Emergency, which runs one of the capital’s main hospitals.
“There was a very strong explosion that shook the entire area, which is now blocked by the security forces,” Haseebullah, a trader in the area, confirms to Efe.
The suicide attack comes after the jihadist group Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility in January for a bomb attack also in front of the Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which left five dead, according to official data.
The Islamic State is one of the main security threats in Afghanistan after the rise to power of the fundamentalist Taliban in August 2021.
Faced with the increase in these types of attacks claimed by the IS, the Afghan security forces have intensified the number of operations to dismantle the hideouts of the ‘jihadist’ group throughout the country.
On Monday, the Taliban government’s General Directorate of Information (DGI) announced the deaths of at least three prominent IS members in various operations carried out in recent weeks in northern Afghanistan.
