The rescue of nine miners in the Democratic Republic of Congo has gone viral. The accident, captured on video, shows how a gold mine collapsed last Saturday in South Kivu province after heavy rains.
The video shows a man trying to balance himself on a steep slope, digging with a shovel, with a group of men around him. Suddenly a miner jumps out of the rubble and slides down the slope.
The miner redoubles his efforts and leaves the shovel behind to dig into the rubble with his bare hands. Nine miners emerge from the collapsed mine.
A lack of safety procedures and proper equipment is at the root of frequent tunnel collapses in Congolese mines, where miners are trapped underground with little chance of survival.
Two miners were killed in a similar incident at an informal digging site in early March.
